Thursday, Dec. 22       Read Isaiah 7:10-16

from Sarah Webb, Wheeling, WV:

A faithful God and an idolatrous king.  The offer of a sign without limits: “as deep as Sheol or as high as heaven,” which King Ahaz refuses out of a pretense of piety.  God wanting to protect the kingdom of Judah, but the short-sighted king not trusting in God’s goodness.

Signs and wonders are pointers to how God is active in our world.  Signs point the way to how God is dwelling among us.  God is offering a sign of promise to the people of Judah and tells Ahaz the sky is the limit!  When Ahaz refuses this generosity, God gave Ahaz a sign anyway.  “The young woman … shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.”

Immanuel means God with us.  Even when we distrust, God is with us.  When we fear, when we hate, when the world seems dark and uncertain, even then God is with us.  This is the season of signs and wonders!  As the days grow darker, our hearts burn brighter because of this wondrous truth: that God dwells among us.

Reveal your presence to me now, O God, as I wait upon you – the One already here with me, with us, with all of us.  Amen.
