Wednesday, Dec. 14    Read Psalm 89:5-29

from Donald Snyder, First Christian Church, Beckley, WV:

From a human perspective, God has broken His promise to David.  The people have divided themselves north (Israel) and south (Judah), and the rule has been equally divided. Nevertheless, where human beings fail, God remains steadfast and prevails.  What established the promise made to David was not his personal integrity.  The man after God’s heart is presented to us, warts and all.  Rather, the steadfast love and faithfulness of God, which have not changed, is what we are given. Division is God’s discipline for Solomon’s sin, but the promise will not be forgotten.  The foundation stones of God’s throne—righteousness and justice—will not be shaken either, and in the distant future the first cries of birth will be heard from a manger in David’s city.  Moreover, the angelic chorus heralding the Son of God’s arrival announce not only the fulfillment of the promise made to David, but the ultimate covenant restoration between the Lord and His people.

Help me to see your promises unbroken, and your faithfulness fulfilled in the coming of your Christ, O God.  I wait with all of your people in hope and trust. Amen.
