Read. Isaiah 61:1-11

from Rev. Kevin Bowers, First Christian Church, Weirton

You probably have to be of a certain age to remember being excited when the Sears Christmas catalog came to your house. We would sit down for what seemed to be hours and examine every page with great intensity. We dreamed about getting the many gifts for Christmas that were in the catalog and we usually did end up getting one or two.

Those were Christmases past. I really don’t think if Sears still sent out the catalogs I’d spend a lot of time with it today. Life has changed.   My Christmas wishes are no longer a new 10 speed bike, or a “Chutes and Ladders” game. My wishes come more in the form of today’s scripture.

God has anointed us to proclaim good news to the poor. To bind the brokenhearted and set the captives free. My wish is that as Christians we will comfort those who mourn, to love justice and be the people God has called us to be.

Part of me still wishes that life could be as simplistic as a Sears Christmas catalog, but today that catalog seems so shallow.

I encourage you to open your Bible and read today’s scripture out loud. And with it have a prayer that God will speak to you and to Christians throughout the world, that our hearts will move from the material to the eternal.

Help us to dream bigger dreams in this season, Lord – dreams for the abundant life you desire for all your world.
