Read Philippians 2.5-11

Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

who, though he was in the form of God,

did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited,

but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave,

                                being born in human likeness.

And being found in human form,

he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—

                                                even death on a cross.

Therefore God also highly exalted him

and gave him the name that is above every name,

so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

From Rev. William Pollack, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Princeton

This scripture tells the “life” story of Jesus through the words “existed”, “emptied”, and “exalted”. I am always drawn to the way these words reveal the character of our Lord, His condemnation and the ultimate coronation with His triumphant return to Heaven following the resurrection and ascension. The words tell me He knew exactly what He was doing. It was not easy, as the cross reveals, yet He remained faithful. But even more, I am compelled to hear the imperative words to be like Him. “Have this same attitude in yourselves”, proclaims a possible reality in our day; to be like Him! It also reveals a challenge for us. Yet, what would our world, the Church, our community and families be like if we could have an attitude like Jesus. Through Lent and the rest of our lives may it be so for His honor and glory!

Lord, as You demonstrated Your willingness to come on our behalf,

may we also desire to mirror Your faithfulness

as we live our lives for You! In Jesus’ name we pray.
