Psalm 122

Praise the LORD! Happy are those who fear the LORD, who greatly delight in his commandments. Their descendants will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever. They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright; they are gracious, merciful, and righteous. It is well with those who deal generously and lend, who conduct their affairs with justice.

For the righteous will never be moved; they will be remembered forever. They are not afraid of evil tidings; their hearts are firm, secure in the LORD. Their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes. They have distributed freely, they have given to the poor; their righteousness endures forever; their horn is exalted in honor. The wicked see it and are angry; they gnash their teeth and melt away; the desire of the wicked comes to nothing.

“All I want is peace on earth.”  My family is accustomed to me saying this when I am asked what I would like for Christmas.  This Psalm echoes my desire.  The call for prayers for peace within the walls of Jerusalem is a common prayer in Israel today. The longing for peace occupies the hearts and prayers of many around the world. As we experience this Advent in its wholeness, let us pray for the peace that passes understanding. Let us pray for others who long for peace in the midst of their struggles; who seek hope in the midst of despair; and who only desire enough in the reality of their unmet needs. Let us pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Yet, let us also pray for one another so that together the joy of the Lord will fill our hearts as we wait expectantly for the Prince of Peace and His second appearing!

Lord, make me a movement for wholeness

in the midst of this fragmented world,

so that others may know the joy of Your worship

and the peace You offer to all who ask.

I pray in Jesus’ name.
