Mar. 7 – Thursday                                              Read Joshua 5:9-12

The LORD said to Joshua, “Today I have rolled away from you the disgrace of Egypt.” And so that place is called Gilgal to this day.

While the Israelites were camped in Gilgal they kept the passover in the evening on the fourteenth day of the month in the plains of Jericho. On the day after the passover, on that very day, they ate the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. The manna ceased on the day they ate the produce of the land, and the Israelites no longer had manna; they ate the crops of the land of Canaan that year.

Forty long years of bondage and disgrace at the hands of the Egyptians.  Two generations had passed since the Israelites had gone into the wilderness.  Separated by years, many of those who went into the wilderness never came out but died there.  Their Jewish customs and honor died there with them.  Now, about to enter the Promised Land, it was time for a new leader, Joshua, to restore the covenant with Abraham.  This could only be done through the ritual of circumcision of those males born in the wilderness.  The “reproach,” the “shame” of Egypt was the disgrace and mocking put upon the Israelites by the Egyptians.  Subject to these demeaning acts, the Israelites lost track and faith as to who they were as God’s favored people.  The “pain” of the circumcision operation lasted a few days, but removal of their shame was forever.  Jesus was the subject of disgrace and mocking as well.  Our sins became his sins.  His humiliation and rejection, and ours, too, were removed forever through his death and resurrection.

Help us, O God, to trust the promise of your new day

as we seek freedom and victory over sin here and now.
