Feb. 16 – Saturday                                            Read Matthew 6:19-21

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

“Do not accumulate treasures on earth,” he says.  Yet we are very prone to that, aren’t we?  We think we need something so badly, yet after we get it we find it wasn’t really a need at all but a factor of our personal perspective and worldly desire.  During their forty years in the desert, the people of Israel were tested to see if they were able to observe God’s Law by gathering only enough manna for a single day, but to avoid accumulating stores for following days.  Stored manna would spoil and, therefore, be of no value nutritionally or spiritually.

Jesus says: “store up treasures for yourselves in heaven.”  When we place our trust on stored up goods of this world, we run the danger of dividing life into the “spiritual” and the “material.”  By placing the emphasis on God, we will have freedom of His grace to share with others what we ourselves possess.

Dear God, lead us from the temptation to find worldly things so important.  “For where our hearts are, there will be our treasures also.”
