Luke 1:39-45 —

In those days Mary set out and went with haste to a Judean town in the hill country, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.  When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.  And why has this happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me?  For as soon as I heard the sound of your greeting, the child in my womb leaped for joy.  And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her by the Lord.”

There is absolutely nothing like it!  There is nothing that compares with the feeling of a baby moving within you.  It makes it real – the fact that you have conceived a child that you will be holding in your arms in just a few short months.  So it’s easy to imagine the excitement of these two expectant mothers as Elizabeth feels her baby leap within her and she shares with Mary the realization of what it meant to her.

During Advent we are each called to conceive Christ anew.  We are called to birth the newborn babe into the world.  We are challenged to excitedly experience anew the movement of the Spirit within us and allow Christ to once again be conceived in our lives and the lives of all with whom we come in contact.  It is then that the incarnate word of God will be fulfilled and Christ’s birth will be celebrated by all of creation.

God of love, help me to experience with joy your coming anew to my life and enable me to spread that joy wherever I go.
