Psalm 85:8-13

Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.  Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land.  Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other.  Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky.  The LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.  Righteousness will go before him, and will make a path for his steps.

What do you want for Christmas? A question I am asked each year around this time. For years I requested for “peace on Earth” to which my family often laughed. Then one Christmas, Nanette gave me what I was asking for…”peace on Earth” and this ornament hangs on our tree each year! The Psalmist appears to be asking for the same. Following a request for peace to come (vv. 1-7), the Psalmist expects to hear God’s answer. He believes that God will send peace to those who will remain steadfast and faithful. He will give what is good to those who give Him honor and respect. As a result, the harvest will be fruitful and the needs of the people will be satisfied. So, what do you want for Christmas? This Advent season, let us join together in asking God for “peace on earth” and rejoice when He answers our prayers.

Lord, thank you for wanting to give us good gifts because of your love for us. Thank you especially for sending your greatest gift, Jesus, who is the Prince of Peace.
