From Rev. Dawna Watkins, Bluefield, WV

Read Psalm 85:8-13:

8 ¶ Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his faithful, to those who turn to him in their hearts.
9 Surely his salvation is at hand for those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land.
10 Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet; righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness will spring up from the ground, and righteousness will look down from the sky.
12 The LORD will give what is good, and our land will yield its increase.
13 Righteousness will go before him, and will make a path for his steps.

You know that excited feeling of rediscovery in rereading an old favorite book; one you haven’t read in years.  It seems familiar but you had forgotten the details so there are new insights. That’s the excitement of the Advent Story for me; rediscovering the details.

If we read this entire Psalm, there is a prayer that we as children of God be forgiven of our sins and be restored. But in this focus at the end, we reclaim the peace, hope, love and joy of Jesus’ message.

While you’re rereading the scriptures that make up the Advent and Christmas Story, watch for the joining of steadfast love, faithfulness, righteousness and peace. In other words, count blessings and see where that path leads.

God of life, in your sight everything old is new again.  Help me to hear with new ears, see with new eyes, experience with a new heart the fulfillment of your promises in Christ Jesus.
