From Rev. Dr. Larry Grimes, Beech Bottom Community C. C.

Read Isaiah 40:9-11

Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!”  See, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.  He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. (NRSV)

We were climbing slowly out of the deep

valley under heavy canopy. It was dark there

beneath the trees. We could feel the valley rise

step by step. Our thighs loosened. The pain left.

The trail flattened and ran straight along a ridge.

Then, to our right, we saw it. Where trees had been

the full sky was alive with light. Stars. Galaxies of stars.

We walked out onto solid rock, stood, stared

into the bright. The moon hung in crescent,

the love star reached down from beneath it.

We put down our packs there on the rocks

Pulled out a loaf of flat bread, broke it and ate.

Then we slept in the soft glow, waking

in crisp dawn looking down into a meadow

where a young boy carried a lamb in his arms.

Behind him the ewe followed toward  the open

door of a barn.

            Here is your God!

My God, here is your child.  Carry me close to your heart, as I open my life to Christ’s coming!
