Prayer for Unity: Wednesday

On this last day of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the Church observes the commemoration of the Conversion of St. Paul. One of the prayers offered for the day brings a fitting end to the observance, and reminds Christ’s disciples of our call to continue in the quest for the fulfillment of Christ’s prayer, “that they all may be one.”

Lord God, the source of truth and love,
keep us faithful to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship,
united in prayer and the breaking of bread,
and one in joy and simplicity of heart,
in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prayer for Unity – Tuesday

God of unity and peace, we pray for the one Body of Christ. May your Spirit of unity dwell in us as we together proclaim your Gospel. Unite the churches in the proclamation of your Gospel and help us to encourage one another and build up each other in our ministries. There are times when we are quick to hurt our brothers and sisters. Humble us to seek out forgiveness and to forgive as we have been forgiven. And in those moments when we cannot seem to agree with one another, let your spirit come into our souls, to keep our hearts open to one another. Remind us that we cannot make the journey of life on our own.

Gracious God, to your Church you have entrusted the message of the Gospel, and have empowered its people to share it through every facet of our daily lives. Prosper the work of our hands in bringing that message to those we encounter with a holy joy that comes with sharing our very selves with others, so that we all may unite in glory and praise of your holy name; through Christ our Lord.

God of all love, in Jesus Christ you have called your one family together around one table to be fed by one Bread. May we who proclaim our baptismal faith anew each week at your great feast be so refreshed by your Spirit that we may live as those who believe in the vision of life which he came to reveal: A world made whole and at peace; for we pray in union with him and with all your people of goodwill. Amen.

Today’s Prayer in this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (Jan. 18-25) is offered below. Disciples of Christ have kept Christ’s prayer “that they all be one” as the guiding image for our mission throughout our history. May it continue to be so.

O God, give us grace seriously to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions; take away all hatred and prejudice, and whatever else may hinder us from godly union and concord; that, as there is but one Body and one Spirit, one hope of our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father of us all, so we may be all of one heart and one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and charity, and may with one mind and one mouth glorify you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
